The new star in the Norwegian pop-jazz sky
Ellen Andrea Wang can enjoy a fast-paced career: The young bassist and singer is being celebrated in a wide variety of bands and projects – For example, she is playing with super drummer Manu Katche on an extensive tour, she is a member of Marilyn Mazur’s Shamania, and right now the Norwegian women’s power trio “Gurls” is making a splash in her home country. Above all, of course, she is the head of her own trio.
But the woman not only sings and plays, she is also a great composer/songwriter who skillfully masters the keyboard of song aesthetics and rock energy. Catchy melodies readily form the basis for extended jazz-inspired phrasing.
Classically educated, with violin and choral singing in her youth and double bass studies at the Oslo Conservatory, the young woman is equipped with the complete tools to realize her own ideas. Her clearest statement is her trio, with which she brings original compositions and well-known pop numbers to the stage with immense joy of playing. Her sound worlds range from acoustic jazz to synth-funk with driving grooves and opulent choral movements.
On her current, third album “Closeness” she presents with guitarist Rob Luft (UK) and drummer Jon Fält (SE) an impressive mixture of traditional spirituals, own compositions and two cover versions of Ornette Coleman and Pat Metheny. Ellen Andrea Wang’s fourth studio album “Closeness II” will be released on October 4, 2024.
