Nils Wülker is widely regarded as one of Europe’s leading trumpet players and composers in contemporary jazz. Born in Bonn in 1977, his musical journey began at the age of seven with piano lessons before he switched to the trumpet at ten. During a high school exchange year in the United States, he discovered his passion for jazz through artists such as Herbie Hancock and Miles Davis, an experience that would shape his artistic path.Back in Germany, Wülker joined the Youth Jazz Orchestra of North Rhine-Westphalia before studying at the prestigious Hanns Eisler Academy of Music in Berlin. Even during his studies, he performed with some of Germany’s most influential jazz ensembles, including the German National Youth Jazz Orchestra (BuJazzO) and the RIAS Big Band. In 2002, he released his critically acclaimed debut album High Spirits.
Since then, Nils Wülker has developed a distinctive musical voice of his own. His compositions combine the freedom of jazz improvisation with memorable melodies and contemporary influences from pop and electronic music. At the heart of it all is his unmistakable trumpet sound: warm, clear and deeply expressive.Whether performing with his own band, in duo with his longtime musical partner Arne Jansen or alongside renowned orchestras, Nils Wülker creates music that brings together the richness of the jazz tradition with openness, curiosity and emotional depth. His concerts appeal equally to dedicated jazz audiences and listeners eager to discover new musical perspectives.
With numerous albums, international tours and a wide range of artistic collaborations, the ECHO Jazz Award winner has established himself as one of the most versatile musicians of his generation. His music is melodic, atmospheric and rich in nuance, a contemporary form of jazz that connects tradition with the sound of today.
